History of Aurora, Colorado

You do not have to be a history buff to appreciate the richness of a city. Though it is the Aurora that everybody knows and loves today, the city did not always have that name. In fact, after its establishment in 1891, the city was known as Fletcher–named after businessman and avid real estate native, Donald Fletcher. Deciding that the name did not fit the scene, it was changed to Aurora in 1907.

Quickly growing in size since its establishment, the city has always rivaled Denver in matters of population and size. Home to many profound moments, like the election of the first female mayor (Norma O. Walker) to govern a city with a population exceeding sixty thousand in 1965, or a preferred area of visitation by Presidents Warren G. Harding, candidate John Kerry, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Dwight D. Eisenhower due to its heavy military presence, the city undoubtedly maintains a timeline that radiates history that is anything but boring.

As of recent decades, Aurora has been named the Sportstown by Sports Illustrated’s 50th Anniversary edition. The National Civic League named the city an all-American city in 2008 as well.

With the median age being 33, there is no denying that the area gives way to plenty of energy, bustling businesses, and nightlife. 49 percent of the population is male; 51 percent is female. A fairly diverse population exists in Aurora, including:

  • 70.3% Caucasian
  • 17.9% African American
  • 6.1% Asian American
  • 28.5% Hispanic American

Without a doubt, Aurora is a wonderful place to live due to its diversity, activities, and elemental aspects that make every season more than tolerable, but heavily enjoyable.
